Cul de Poule roughly translates to "Chicken's Ass" and I sure felt like one after eating here. Given all the hype and good reviews this place has received, I was really looking forward to trying it out.
Puffin and I are probably going to disagree but there were many more misses than hits. Her speared prawns with pineapple and tropical "guacamole" were a strange mix - a trio of soloists, dueling to be heard over one another. Better was my salmon ball, which when chopped into became like a warm, creamy risotto. This was quite nice.
The pork chop with mashed potatoes was unforgivably bland. So much so that I had to strain to taste anything other than the wan prune sauce in which it was cooked.
Worst of all, however, was the spicy lamb with eggplant. Certainly they were joking me - they must have forgotten the spices altogether. This was a watery, boring clump of shredded animal - the nicely done eggplant was not going to save it.
It's a small, beautiful space. Seats very few - perhaps twenty tops - and was filled completely - I looked around at the other diners to see if I could divine their reaction but they held their poker faces well. Perhaps it's just me and my bad taste, perhaps I don't have an educated enough palate....

Oh.. the salmon ball was more than quite nice. It was good. I liked my prawn, pineapples and some mash starter too!
ReplyDeleteI have to admit the mains was disappointing.. but the starters and the really yummilicious chocolate caramel mousse did save the night for me.
The mousse was nice, that is true. Overall, this place was a dud though.
