Sweet Tooth Winter Mashup - Paris

Hot Chocolate with Marshmallow, Top Shelf
Imagine taking a marshmallow from Pain de Sucre and dropping it into a creamy, dark hot chocolate from La Maison du Chocolat. I did just that. From the window of Pain de Sucre, I calculated that pink and brown would make the best colors for the photo. I was less sure how the flavors would mix.

I selected an Eau de Rose guimauve (rose water flavored marshmallow.) I assure you the photo isn't retouched - it really does give off an almost nuclear pink glow. I then walked down rue de Rivoli to the La Maison du Chocolat near the Louvre.

I ordered a hot chocolate and as the salesladies watched, I plopped the pink cube right in and began to stir. It only took a few minutes to melt completely. Pure deliciousness - the two tastes take turns perfectly. The immediate direct hit of chocolate patiently gives way to the soothing rose water. It repeats over and over, in rhythm, each sip.

  2. Wow, that was genius ! And how beautiful - the color of that marshmallow is incredible. I'd never believe it was real -- if I hadn't eaten one myself when I was in Paris! ;)

Did the salesladies at Maison du Chocolat mind you doing that? I wouldn't be surprised at an obnoxious scene unfolding, but it seems like they didn't even bat an eye. Tant mieux!

  3. Yes Puffin, when we were webcalling yesterday I'd just finished drinking it. I was all jacked-up on sugar and chocolate. WOOHOO!!

  4. Kerrin, where I come from, you always have marshmallows in your hot chocolate - so what better place to get marshmallows here than PDS, right?

As far as the salesladies go, let's just say that I have a face such that even NY City pamphleteers don't hand me stuff on the street. So, the salesladies all came over and watched, but they didn't say a thing...

  5. Awesome idea and post. What is the Hot chocolate from La Maison du Chocolat like? Is it full-on sludge thickness? it looks a bit more fluid than Jacques?

  6. It mus be nice to leap back and forth from 2 of the premier food cities in the world. Next time I go to PAris I consult you. What's the best Fromagerie in Paris these days/ Or is it just best to hit open air markets?

my email to you gmail keeps getting bounced back..

  7. Niko, I've never had the hot chocolate at Jacques Torres (I know, I must rectify that) so I cannot compare the two. The MDC version is viscous, but not sludgelike. Really good.

Yes, it is a nice life I have at the moment, I must admit. I am not a cheese expert by any stretch but many of my Parisian colleagues are - I will consult with them and get out a post about cheese. Keep up the good work at Dessertbuzz.

  9. @Kef - just make sure you plop the marshmallow into the hot chocolate and stir it inside Maison du Chocolat. I want to start a trend....
