Eastern & Oriental Hotel - Penang, Malaysia

How Do You Say "Sucked" in Malay?
These scones look great, right? They weren't and neither was anything else at the E&O high tea. It sounded like a good idea but with 20/20 hindsight it was foolish. Who travels to Penang, surrounded by some of the best street food and goes to some froofy high tea and an old, colonial hotel? (I'm raising my hand now....) Idiot!

No amount of clotted cream or cheap strawberry preserves could save them. They were dense, tasteless pucks that I wanted to jettison out the window into the Straits of Malacca.

Ditto the sandwiches. For 42 Ringgit per person (about 21 USD) I expected better. The roast beef was especially bad. We placed it back in the tray with teeth marks and all.

By the time the dessert tray arrived I didn't even want any. I took a bite of the cookie, which was not bad.

This is one of those white behemoths that the British build in all of their colonies. It's just like Raffles in Singapore. Been there, done that.

Didn't seem too popular while we were there - not too many folks walking around.

At least we got some nice views after tea....

  1. Haha... this is your favorite paper, NY Times recommendation babe! How can you slam it?

Got to say... rather forgetable. Didn't even bother to get good tea. Twinnings? Definitely more room for improvement given the price they are charging.
