Trdelnik Stall - Prague

Wooden Stake and a Fire...
We're on a short vacation in Prague and as always, our eyes are peeled for street food. As luck would have it for me, one of the first stalls we encountered was making a pastry called Trdelnik. It quite literally is dough on a wooden stake, roasted on an open flame and then sugared and spiced. It tasted like a snickerdoodle. Not too bad, not overwhelmingly good.

It's hard to walk by and not stop to figure out what's going on. Things are spinning, flames are licking, the smell calls you closer.

Apparently, this is a Slovak specialty but is catching on in Prague. The tourists go for it (I was one of them.) This particular cart was in Mala Strana.

  1. Sugared and spiced dough--sounds wonderful. Reminds me of those cinnamon snails my mom always made with leftover pie dough. Mmmmm.

  2. Only one problem.. it gets cold fast. I think I will like it a whole lot more if it's hot.

But then again.. that's me and as FN says.. "The weird Chinese way"...

  3. Dear Puff!

This is not a Slovakian sweet.
More than a thousand year Hungarians has the recipe and they are making it all over in Hungary and Transsylvania.

    Best regards
